About:

Italian Space Agency (ASI)

Established in 1988, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) promotes and develops scientific and technological research in the space and aerospace domains, while implementing Italy’s space policy in line with government guidelines. Today, ASI ranks among the world’s top six space agencies, reflecting the central role Italy plays in Europe and beyond. From the pioneering San Marco satellites to becoming the third-largest contributor to the European Space Agency (ESA), Italy continues to be a leading player, also among the first signatories of NASA’s Artemis Accords.

ASI’s headquarters are in Rome, which also hosts the Space Science Data Centre, with additional operational centers in Matera (Giuseppe Colombo  Space Centre), Selargius near Cagliari (Sardinia Deep Space Antenna), and Malindi, Kenya (Luigi Broglio Space Centre).

Italy is one of the few countries in the world that, through its own agency, operates in all space application fields. ASI combines scientific expertise with strong diplomatic capacity, forging strategic partnerships with major international agencies. Supporting the internationalization and competitiveness of the Italian space industry is also a core institutional mission. These synergies, together with the contribution of national research and manufacturing, have enabled significant advances in astrophysics, human and robotic exploration, propulsion, telecommunications, navigation, and Earth observation. Among the major achievements is the International Space Station (ISS), to which Italy has contributed over half of the pressurized living modules, while Italian astronauts regularly serve in orbit.

Within the Artemis Program, in 2025 ASI has signed a contract with the Italian industry for the preliminary design phase of MPH, a multi-purpose habitation module envisioned as a permanent habitat on the Moon, designed to operate in synergy with other components of the Artemis

architecture.
